Free RPO Concert at Charlotte Beach
Happy Summer!
If you are looking for something musical (and free) to do tomorrow night, there is a free Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concert at Charlotte Beach, Wednesday, July 9th @ 7:30 pm. The weather looks like it is going to be beautiful!

SUMMER LESSONS - openings still available!
Consider including the Summer Session at Thistledown Piano & Violin Studio in your plan for summer activities. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate you. Summer lessons are offered at a discount price of $15 per 30 minute lesson or $20 per 45 minute lesson.
Packages available starting with a 3 lesson package all the way through to a 7 lesson package. Please see complete details on the registration form.

Practice Tips
Practice Guidelines for Parents and Students
1. Set aside an agreed upon time for practicing each day.
2. Stress that the quality, not the quantity, of practicing is what counts for real progress.
3. A quality practice of 4-6 days per week is most effective.
a. 15-20 minutes/day for beginners
b. 20-30 minutes/day for 2nd year and beyond
c. 30-60 minutes/day for intermediate to advanced
4. Be pleasant and encouraging about practicing
5. Teach your child to treat the practice session with the same respect that he gives to school lessons and homework.
6. Anticipate ups and downs in attitude and practicing and a number of growing pain periods as well.
7. Remember that music training is a long-term investment, just as schooling is.
8. Home practicing charts with small rewards are often helpful.
9. Don’t despair if practicing becomes non-existent for awhile. Your child will make progress at the lesson itself, though it will be slower.
10. Do not cancel your child’s lesson due to the fact that he/she has not practiced during the week.
11. Practice record should be checked and signed by a parent and brought to the lesson. 12. Always let your child feel that you are proud of his/her achievements, even if they are small.

Recital 2011
Thistledown Piano & Violin Studio held it's annual recital on May 7, 2011, at Northridge Church in Rochester, NY, in a large meeting room across from the auditorium. Because of the large number of students participating, there were three recitals in one day: 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. The room was decorated with white and purple flowers, abundant potted plants, and balloon bouquets of green and white. The students played on a Yamaha upright piano and their image was shown on a screen nearby with live video feed so everyone in the room was able to see them.
In each recital the students really shone and played beautifully. Most students played two pieces, one from their level books as a graduation piece, and another of their choosing as a recital piece. An award ceremony crowned the closing of each recital, with each student receiving a special certificate, ribbon, medal, or trophy to recognize their hard work during the year. The completion of each level in the Piano Adventures series earns an award. Those who are past these books and into advanced piano literature must complete certain criteria during the year to earn their awards. The violin students also received awards for completing Suzuki books. We are very proud of all of our students and their wonderful musical accomplishments.

Welcome Students
Welcome to all Thistledown Piano & Violin Students!
We've started the year with many returning students and a few new ones.
This year we are trying something new: the Thistledown Award Program. We put a display table in the studio showing samples of all the awards. If you need more information, go to the "Awards Program" page on this blog.
This blog is also something new. Feel free to explore and offer any comments. We are just learning, so it may take us awhile to work out the bugs.
